So, you've heard all the hype about online education, and now you're wondering if you could earn a degree online. There are a wide array of colleges offering online degrees, and many of them are perfectly legitimate, but online learning isn't right for everyone. There are a few traits necessary to succeed at earning a degree online.
Self Motivation
In an online learning environment, no one is going to be looking over your shoulder, making sure you are studying and doing assignments. No one is going to be praising your efforts, either. Although the best online schools do offer some
interaction with the teacher and other students, you are largely on your own. If you need someone keeping tabs on you, you might do better in a brick and mortar school.
Time Management
If you're like most adults, you have responsibilities. Maybe you work full-time; perhaps you're raising a family. Maybe you're doing both. Adding the commitments of school to an already busy schedule requires some juggling. It can be done-- plenty of people do it everyday-- but it does require careful time management. Evaluate your schedule carefully to see if you can add one more thing.
Persistence
Earning a degree online is challenging. There will be days you'll feel frustrated and want to give up. To succeed, you need
persistence and commitment. You need the ability to set goals and see those goals through to the end, regardless of challenges and obstacles.
Ability to Learn Visually
Most internet classes are offered through online books, emails, and text documents. If you learn best by having someone explain the information to you, you'll need a school that offers video casting and podcasting.
Technical Ability
Technical skills needed vary by school and program, but basic computer and
internet skills are required for online education. In general, you'll need to be proficient in:
- Email
- Message boards
- Sending and receiving attachments
- Viewing videos
- Downloading documents
